Vintage Fashion Graphics

Not sure what to make with this vintage fashion graphic but it is worth grabbing while its available.

Perhaps a greeting card - could put "happy birthday gorgeous" on it. Maybe elements for collage or decoupage. Possibilities.

Vintage Kwik Sew's Sweatshirts Unlimited sewing project

A sleepshirt made with Kwik Sew's Sweatshirts Unlimited

What to do when your father needs a new sleepshirt and the shops have none? Sleepwear needs to be roomy and comfy - just like the sweatshirts in this book.

So I traced off the sweatshirt pattern and lengthened it. Initially I intended to make the crew neck version but after cutting the neckband and sewing the ends together it looked so small. I tried it on and even on me it was snug, so I recut the neckline as the V-neck.

The cotton spandex fabric was a nuisance to lay out flat and fold but did sew and overlock easily.

The cutest sloth to sew

Last post I shared a promotion from Creative Fabrica. They have lots of useful things to inspire the crafter, creator and people who like to make things. Did you know they also have a sewing section?

This cute sloth is one of the many sewing and craft patterns available on Creative Fabrica. This particular pattern is only available to subscribers but there are others that you can purchase. This post contains affiliate links meaning I may receive a small payment if you purchase anything on the link, cost to you is the same. Link to felt sloth page.

Crochet for fun in the sun

Happy yellow crochet bikini briefs being created from the same 100 % cotton yarn as the top.

I am using a vintage crochet pattern but there are modern ones using modern threads - one example is this one by Audrey Lopez

Easy 2 hour dress New Look 6750 stretch fabric casual dresses and stash busting

I oiled my overlock machine, dove into my fabric stash and made three dresses from my remnants. All are view B from New Look 6750.

Dress 2 and 3 have twin needle stitched hems. Dress 3 is my favourite to wear, the others are very figure hugging on me and I am just not used to it.

Dress no. 1 - View B, cotton blend fabric with little stretch,
made as per pattern instructions

Dress no.2 - View B
a drapey knit by John Kaldor fabrics.

Dress no.3 - View B, a cotton knit.
This time I removed the shaping
at the waist by ruling straight from the underarm to the hip.
It is cool dress for hot days.

Two colour twin needle stitching on dress 3.

This is a classic easy to wear dress. The BurdaStyle range of dressmaking books are another source of classic patterns and are available with free postage from the Book Depository.

Akita Top again an easy to sew Seamworks Magazine pattern

This is my second Akita top. The first one, I didn't have a long enough piece of fabric, so had to join a bit on the back. This one is made from one piece as per the pattern.

The fabric is a cotton blend remnant and I used a vintage binding from my collection for the neckline.

The side seams are French seams, the other hems are all narrow hems and machine stitched.

Seamworks magazine patterns are print at home. The Akita assembled quickly and was easy to sew. (The French seams were my choice, not required by the pattern)

Granny Squares

A stress relief project.

Nightie marathon Kwik Sew

Two Kwik Sew Ladies nighties. Made as per instructions except for french seams on the sides.

Seamworks Magazine Projects

These are my recent sewing projects. They are all seamworks Magazine patterns.

They are print at home patterns.

Everything went together well, my only issues were with sizing.

Mermaid costume for Barbie

Every Barbie doll wants to dress up like a mermaid at least once.

I used a green embossed double knit with just a little stretch, a row of sequins at her waist and both the skirt and top have snap closures.

Embroidered bracelet DMC mini kit

I used to embroider regularly so this was like going back in time.

The kit contained pre-printed ribbon, thread and instructions. It took an evening while watching TV.

New Look 6356 easy 2 hour tops

Both tops are made with cotton fabric from my stash. Both pieces were too short to cut the back from one length so there is a join at the back waist.

The pattern says to insert a back zipper which I did for the bird fabric, but after trying it on I decided I didn't need a zip for the fox fabric version.

I tried using bias binding instead of facings in the first version but didn't get it to sit quite right. So the fox fabric version has a neckline facing as per pattern instructions.

My first cutwork embroidery

I have two cutwork embroidery cards for the Janome memory craft 5700.

Memory card no. 107 cutwork designs
Memory card no. 29 cutwork series

Today I tried a small design from card 29.
The sample used a lightweight cotton fabric with one layer of water soluble film.  The bobin thread was ordinary sewing thread and the needle thread was ordinary machine embroidery rayon.

Pin-up Sweater from the Gertie Sews Vintage Casual book

The Pin-up Sweater from Gertie Sews Vintage Casual is an easy to sew body hugging t-shirt. I cut size 8 and widened it from waist to hip by about 1.5 cm each side.

The neck binding caused me some page flicking to get the instructions correct. However it all made sense and sewed up fine after reading page 83 inconjunction with the sweater instructions on page 177.

The fabric is a textured 100% cotton knit from my stash.

So I am happy I made a wearable muslin. And yes the book is available free postage at Book Depository.

Shift dress from Gertie sews vintage casual

I traced the shift dress pattern from Gerties sew vintage casual book today. I ended up doing it twice because I didn't properly look at which pattern line I was supposed to cut. There are two dashed lines, one set for size 8 and a shorter set for size 12. My mistake, anyway it is a quick and easy pattern to trace once you follow the correct line for your size.

I used a polyester cotton for the collar and a 100% cotton for the dress.

Stripey t-shirt Butterick 6475

I made the V neck t-shirt and added a ruffled band to increase the length.
